I-70 Mountain Corridor - TRUTH
The Reality |
|
All pain; no gain
Top 10 Reasons I-70 widening without Transit is a bad idea.
- A 15 year traffic nightmare with no alternate route.
- Every morning will be like Saturday morning, T-Rex comes to the mountains.
- Every afternoon will be like Sunday afternoon, cone zones and construction trucks every day.
- The Western Slope tourism economy will be put in a choke hold.
- Parking is already a problem in the Resort Areas. Where will even more cars go once they get there?
- The highway will be obsolete the day it is finished, (CDOT estimates sometime in 2020).
- Construction will disturb toxic mine tailings and pollute one of the metro areas main water sources.
- Increased traffic and use of more chemical de-icers will further pollute Colorado's air and water.
- One of Colorado's most valuable historical areas will be irreparably damaged.
- Possible tolling before and during construction to pay for the improvements.

A Better Solution
Less pain; more gain
Top 10 Reasons why a Fixed Guideway is a good idea.
For more technical details, please see the Federal Transit Administration reports, and Technical details.
- The project can be completed in 5 years instead of 15.
- Impact on the current highway can be minimized
- An AGS (Advanced Guideway System) system won't be as heavily dependent upon petroleum based resources.
- Any necessary highway improvements can be made after the transit alternative is complete.
- An AGS transit system can last 50 years while the highway needs to be resurfaced every 6 to 8 years.
- A Guideway monorail would be a tourist attraction, encouraging out-of-towners to pass up the rental car.
- The AGS transit system can be used to haul freight, removing some of the need for tractor/trailer trucks from the highway.
- The AGS transit system will lead to concentrated, planned commercial and residential development in close proximity to stations rather than sprawl throughout the I-70 corridor.
- Pollution during and after construction will be minimized.
- The Guideway has commercial revenue potential as a transmission line for utilities and other high tech uses.
